1.36 million euros for a research project: Virtual reality aims to help children with social anxiety disorder

The VISAKI project’s research team is developing and evaluating an interactive system for children ages eight to twelve: The platform uses virtual reality (VR) and, in a safe environment, helps children practice their social skills in various scenarios through playful elements and immersive experiences.

To this end, the researchers are creating interactive gamification elements, complex interaction options, and therapeutic scenarios. In multi-user sessions, multiple users can support one another. Represented by avatars, the children experience a sense of community in these virtual group interactions and improve their social skills. VR enables more intensive and frequent practice of the techniques they have learned. The system also bridges gaps between therapy sessions and increases the effectiveness of treatment.

Children who suffer from social anxiety disorder are severely impaired in their academic and social lives. The anxiety leads to social withdrawal, loneliness, and further mental health problems in adulthood. Without early treatment, these disorders usually persist. This often has negative effects on the education and social participation of those affected.

Implementation

The technology can be used in clinics and schools. The project results could contribute to the redesign of treatment for social anxiety disorders and be expanded to include other anxiety disorders and age groups.
